From Pixels to Grain

Embracing Film Photography Once More

Since the beginning of the year I’ve been shooting on film. Definitely not something that was planned. I happened upon a really good deal for a Nikon F3 in great condition. With the tread of film making a come back the price and process have gone up significantly since my days of work in the photo lab. So I only shot a roll here and there.

Not sure what I was expecting but the mind shift needed to work with film again did catch me off guard. You are not shooting fast, at least I’m not. Finding good light and getting focus proved very changeling. Digital is forgiving, you can raise your ISO if need. Not so much the case with film since your speed is locked in. I’m still looking for the balance of not treating this so precious but keeping in mind I do have a finite number of frames.

Photography is a skill that needs to be practiced so I’m ready to embrace film once more. Things I will be working on as I move forward are learning to take moment before the shot, missing a moment is ok. I would rather have something in focus.

The set below is a mix of cinestill 400 and Fujifilm 400. The locations vary from Dallas, Austin, and San Jose.
